a. Regular service: If you are in Nepal, you should apply at the District Administration Office (DAO) or Area Administration Office (AAO) from where your citizenship certificate or minor identity card was issued. Typically, passports applied through these offices are issued within 10 to 30 days. The exact duration may vary depending on the distance from the Department of Passports and the available transportation facilities.
b. Emergency Service: If you require a passport urgently, you can apply directly at the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu. Under this service, passports are typically issued within two working days after enrollment. For urgent service additional fees apply in the following manner: NPR 7,000 for a 34-page passport and NPR 12,000 for a 66-page passport.
Please note that DAOs, AAOs, or Nepali missions abroad only offer regular service and not emergency/fast-track services. Similarly, the Department of Passport offers only fast-track services; regular services are not available here.
Required documents for E-passport application.
A. When applying within Nepal: When applying for a passport in Nepal, the following documents are required:
1. A copy of the application form with the barcode and QR code received after filling out the form (preferably printed, and if not, digital copy).
2. Original Nepali Citizenship Certificate or original Minor Identity Card.
3. Original current passport/expired passport (if already a bearer of Nepali Passport).
4. National Identity Card or the National Identity Card number.
5. Bank voucher or cash receipt of the revenue payment.
Additional Documents for Minors: When applying for passport for minors (below the age of 16) at the Department of Passports, following additional documents (original copy) must be presented:
1. Verification of the minor identity card from the relevant district/area administration office (district verification)
2. Citizenship of parents/guardian of the minor applicant
3. Additional documents, if necessary
B. Required Documents for Application from Abroad: When applying for a passport from abroad, the following documents are required:
1. A copy of the application form with the barcode and QR code received after filling out the form (preferably printed, and if not, digital).
2. Original Nepali Citizenship or Minor Identity Card.
3. Original current passport
4. Bank voucher or cash receipt of the revenue payment.
5. Additional documents, if necessary.
Special Provision for first time passport applications for children born abroad to Nepali parents
Obtain a birth registration or temporary registration number: Children born abroad to Nepali parents who do not possess a Minor Identity Card can apply for a passport through the respective Nepali diplomatic mission. In such cases, the embassy or consulate will issue a birth registration certificate or assign a temporary registration number. This number should be entered in the 'Citizenship Number' field of the passport application form.
Required Documents:
1. Copies of Nepali citizenship certificates of both parents of the child
2. Copies of passports of both parents
3. Marriage registration certificate of parents
4. Original birth registration certificate of the child
5. Two recent passport-size photographs of the child
After submitting the above documents to the embassy, the embassy will provide the birth registration or temporary registration number. In the passport application form of the minor, the registration number provided by the embassy should be mentioned in place of the citizenship number.
Please note that once a passport has been issued under this provision, obtaining a Minor Identity Card from the relevant District or Area Administration Office in Nepal is mandatory for any future passport renewals.
Additional Documents for Passport Application:
(a). If the date of birth in the citizenship certificate differs from the date of birth in the educational qualification certificate and if it is necessary to obtain a passport using the date of birth as per the educational qualification, a certificate of educational qualification of SLC/SEE or equivalent, or higher level must be provided.
(b). If the date of birth in the citizenship certificate differs from the date of birth in the Indian, British, or Singapore pension slip/documents (Pension Patta) and if it is necessary to obtain a passport using the date of birth as per the pension slip, the Indian, British, or Singapore pension slip (Discharge Certificate) must be provided.
(c). If a married woman needs to include her husband's surname in addition to the one stated in her citizenship certificate for passport purposes, she must provide the marriage registration certificate and her husband's citizenship certificate.
(d). For divorced women, who have included husband’s surname in citizenship or in previous passport and want to exclude husband’s surname in current passport application after divorce, a divorce certificate must be presented.
